Shay’s nursing began in 2010 when she took her first steps into the professional nursing world in the oncology and infectious disease unit at a hospital in South Georgia. In pursuit of a little more autonomy, Shay explored various roles as a dual certified Nurse Practitioner, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, an Assistant Community Health Nursing Director, and Executive Community Health Nursing Director. 

 

However, Shay's journey of discovery didn't start in the hospital. It actually began back in the second grade when she first dipped her toes into the world of storytelling. Those early years saw her crafting short stories with boundless imagination, and as she entered middle school, she discovered a love for poetry. Her words danced on the page, a reflection of the budding artist within.

 

But what truly set Shay apart was her burning desire to make a difference beyond the hospital and clinic walls. No longer content with merely healing bodies, Shay aimed to touch hearts and minds. Her new mission? To increase diversity in literature and elevate health literacy in her community. To fulfill this mission on a local level, she became a board member of the Early Learning Coalition and healthcare organizations.

 

She believed that stories could change the world, and so she became an author, a speaker, and a nurse practitioner who used words as her instruments of change. Her journey was a delightful blend of caring for patients by day and crafting tales that inspired readers to be their best selves by night.

 

Shay's passion for literature was undeniable, a love that had its roots in childhood adventures to libraries, bookstores, and book fairs. She was like a kid in a candy store, and books were her sweetest treats.

 

But Shay couldn't stop at writing for herself. She wanted to spread the magic of storytelling to others. Thus, she transformed into a publishing mentor, guiding aspiring authors on their own creative journeys by creating her very own publishing agency, Muriel's House. 

 

The name, Muriel's House, holds special meaning, as it honors her favorite auntie, a kindred spirit who shared her love for books and learning. Muriel's House is a way to keep her memory and legacy alive.

 

Beyond her literary pursuits, Shay is a woman of faith, a Christ-follower, and a loving wife. She cherishes the simple pleasures of travel, the solace of a good book, and the fulfillment of community service, all while holding her husband's hand.

 

Born and raised in the heart of Miami, Shay earned her academic stripes from the University of Miami (DNP), Emory University (MSN), and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (BSN). She is also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.. These institutions and organizations shaped her into the extraordinary woman she has become.

 

And so, the charming and captivating tale of Dr. Shay Smith unfolded, a story of a nurse, author, and mentor whose journey was a testament to the power of words and the boundless possibilities of a curious heart.
